Smart Energy Project for Lawson Stores

Project Overview

Lawson was founded in the United States in 1939. In 1975, after obtaining a franchise license from the U.S., it opened its first store in Japan. Today, Lawson has grown into a major group centered on the convenience-store business, spanning both convenience retail and entertainment-related sectors. As of the end of December 2022, the company operates 20,693 convenience stores across Japan, Indonesia, the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, and China. In China alone, there are currently 6,500 stores, with plans to exceed 10,000 by 2025.

Lawson convenience stores are characterized by their large number, wide distribution, small single-store area but high energy consumption, and very large regional total energy consumption. The operating companies in each region are key management and control units for green energy conservation in each region.

Customer Problems

1.Data management is difficult

Too many stores, data are scattered and stuck in silos — slows decisions and operations.

2.Difficult to manage

Small stores can’t justify their own metering — high cost, low return.

3.Financial docking is complex

All the stores’ utility bills get sent to headquarter — tons of manual work and easy to mess up.

4.High data stability requirements

Data has to stay stable and fix itself if missing. Need a group-wide setup that can slice usage by branch, team, and user down to the last detail.

5.Difficult to debug

Debugging IoT systems is difficult and requires professional technicians.

6.High renovation costs

The stores are too scattered, and the manpower and travel costs for renovation are extremely high.

Project Solution

1.Energy Management Platform

Support various energy collection, energy control, energy-saving effect query and other services for Lawson convenience stores.

2.Energy monitoring module

In the first stage, high-energy consumption stores were surveyed and found to be abnormal Energy consumption store screening, analysis of high energy consumption reasons, stores Calculation of the recycling value of energy-saving points.

3.Intelligent lighting module

Energy saving technological upgrades will be carried out for the signboard, and automatic control will be implemented for each season on the platform. Based on the energy-saving effect, the platform will remotely issue the optimal strategy.

4.Safe and energy-saving electrical module

Continued in the future, including temperature control for oden warmer , energy-saving use of air conditioning, etc.

Project Effects

1.Online store management

Shifted from uploading handwritten data to real-time online reading. Energy consumption of each store is generated instantly, reducing inspectors' workload and improving data accuracy and authenticity.

2.Energy level management

The online monitoring platform tracks stores' real-time energy use, enabling adjustment of high-consumption equipment and better energy management.

3.KPI evaluation

By setting per-unit-area and regional average energy consumption for stores, and linking energy use to foot traffic, we aim to align energy consumption with turnover.

4.Basis for energy-saving renovation

Compare stores' energy use, assess energy savings for key equipment (AC, signs, lighting, heaters, etc.), identify high-return areas for retrofits, and calculate the actual payback period via the platform.
